The contents of the interview
Q1. Please make a brief description of your designing style.
Many of my works use natural raw materials - cotton, silk, and wool etc.
I often got inspired of a lot of simple images of nature such as bark of
trees, layered leaves or seashells on the beach. Then I would like to
get closer to the same images of touch & texture reproduced into my
works using natural raw materials as much as I can. Also I am keen on
using natural materials which should go back to part of ground eventually.
Q2. Which kind of Product is popular with your customers?
Linen is one of my favourite and also very popular to my customers.
My products use tight-twist woven linnen yarn which is only available
at a limited few suppliers in Japan. I thinks suppliers are very rare
who has tight-twist woven linen technology also in Europe.
This linen fabric has strong advanatages of freshness and coolness
compared to normal linen.
Also I made a new fabrics by combining this linen with wool. It is
differentiated autumn/winter products from normal 100% wool for its
unique touch and texture.
Organic linen fabrics is one of my core items for consumers suffering "chemical
allergy". There is an increased number of inqueries for organic products
in recent years.
Q3. To become a really good designer, what qualities and talents can be need in your opinion?
I think what is required for "a designer" is different from those of "an
artist". We as a designer, should start from researches rather than
conceptual works. Designers should not try to find or stick to one
fundaemental ideas but we should be sensitive to our environment and
should have flexible mindset in order to find the best solution for the
client.
What is required for us is to withdraw a vague image of what is in the
client brain. Then we have to actually reproduce them out in reality.
Therefore, we need to train ourselves a lot for those communication
process. After you get this in a certain sucess, the next step is to
further harmonize our own images and clients.
Q4. What do you think about the function of color in fabric?
I think the function of color in fabric is one of critial element of my
works. Not only 'trends color' but also color in general represents our
times. Color heals people, color has power to let people arm.
We select what color to wear depending on our status of mind whether or
not we are awere of it.
Color can change fabrics impression as if it is a magic!
Coloring is the most difficult and stressful works. And coloring is the most
enjoyable momement.
